As part of National Apprenticeship Week 2026, we invited line managers across our partner organisations to share how apprenticeship training has supported the growth, performance, and confidence of their team members.
The feedback was incredibly encouraging and reinforces just how transformative structured learning can be—for both individuals and the wider business.

Across sectors including logistics, retail, transport, aviation and engineering, managers consistently highlighted three powerful themes:
Increased confidence
Promotion readiness
Enhanced leadership capability
1. Confidence That Translates Into Performance
Many managers reported noticeable boosts in confidence that were directly influencing day‑to‑day performance.
One manager shared how their apprentice had “taken the apprenticeship in her stride,” performing exceptionally well while covering leadership responsibilities during periods of leave. Another described how training had empowered their team member to communicate more effectively, embrace diversity, and engage more confidently across the department.
Even apprentices early in their journey are already seeing benefits, with one manager noting improvements in time management and organisation within the first month.
2. Clear Progression Pathways and Successful Promotions
A standout theme was the direct link between apprenticeship training and career progression.

Managers highlighted several promotions, including:
Team members stepping successfully into Team Leader positions
A learner progressing into an Assistant Manager role
Apprentices using the structured programme as a milestone for future promotion

One manager reported three of their team members being promoted while completing their apprenticeship—demonstrating the tangible impact of combining structured learning with real workplace development.
3. Strengthened People Skills and Leadership Capability
Beyond operational skills, apprentices are developing deeper people‑focused competencies.

Managers described improvements in:
Interpersonal skills
Empathy and understanding of individual needs
Appreciation of diverse working styles
Broader business awareness and thinking beyond their own role

This shift in mindset—seeing the bigger picture and understanding leadership responsibility—is exactly what apprenticeships are designed to foster.
4. Building Strong Foundations for Future Growth
Several managers emphasised how apprenticeships are helping staff build strong, long‑term foundations for ongoing professional growth. The combination of structured learning, on‑the‑job experience, and personalised tutor support continues to play a vital role in preparing future leaders.

As one manager put it:
“The structured learning alongside the on‑the‑job experience has definitely provided benefit and has formed strong foundations for further learning and career progression.”

A Shared Commitment to Development  We are incredibly grateful to the managers who took the time to share their insights. Their reflections show the real difference that high‑quality apprenticeship programmes can make—not only to individual learners, but to culture, performance and capability across entire teams.  At Linden, we remain committed to working in partnership with employers to develop confident, capable future leaders who are equipped to grow with their organisations.  If your business would like to explore how apprenticeships could support your teams, or if you’re interested in our Line Manager Forum, we’d be delighted to share more!  Contact info@lindenmanagement.org.uk.
